It does. When exactly does that happen? It doesn’t happen in a year or a month, but in a moment. Not the cheesy “my child grew up so fast” type of moment, but there is a moment that it is realized.

The weather finally broke yesterday. Okay, 50 degrees for us, and to only last one day. Whatever, we’ll take it. We all went for a walk and it was so much easier then last spring when we first moved here. Everyone stayed on the sidewalk, our 3 year old was old enough to be taught how to cross the street safely….only if he has an adult with him of course, and of course specifically named adults.

Our 3 year old is getting the grasp of “listen to my words, what am I saying?” “Do you hear your brother saying no, don’t take his toy?” It’s a relief from “okay time out”. Not that those have completely vanished….I’m not delirious.

Now for our 2 year old….he’s still a bit of a Whirling Dervish”, but he’s starting to understand and is able to tell me why he was put into a time out. Of course in the beginning his reasoning was always because he was in the pantry. It’s always obvious what we’re working on. That’s getting better now and he can tell me it was because he wasn’t listening. Obviously 2 is still a little rough….too much testing for me. But we’ll get there and by Fall I’ll probably be posting that it’s getting even easier now that he’ll be 3.

It really is happening just like everyone promised, and to think I thought those people were lying to keep me sane.

As an update to Potty Training 101 oh wait 102.

My take on how this is going.

Day one:

Me: “Wow, we took his diaper off and let him run around the house and after his first accident he was running to the potty seat on his own.”

My Partner: First accident. “He’s not ready for this”.

Day three:

As soon as we started to transfer to naked boy to underwear boy, he thought that they were diapers and the accident’s started again.

Me: “He’ll get it. The accidents are a part of the learning process.”

Partner: Takes his underwear back off.

Day five:

Me: In bedroom taking a break after a long week of potty training and teething, and here’s what I hear: “STOP PEEING, STOP PEEING, WE DON’T PEE ON WALLS, YOUR POTTY SEAT IS RIGHT THERE, SIT DOWN, NO NOBODY MOVE, YOU’RE WALKING IN IT!”

Me in the bedroom, laughing my ass off! Let’s see, boys laughing so hard that one of them loses bladder control….hhhmmm, sounds like a normal afternoon to me.

After she showers and has a glass of wine, she recounts the story like this: “wow, wow, stop peeing, sit down your potty seat is right there”.

Okay, now I’m really laughing my ass off, because I was right in the next room and could hear how crazy it go out there. I call her on the difference between how it happened and how she remembered how it happened, now we’re both laughing our asses off!

I have to admit that I did have my own little yelling session yesterday. Our 2 year old has to poop. He runs to the potty seat, but doesn’t make it in time and the poop falls on the floor. I run to get a paper towel, and our 3 year old who is playing with a bulldozer decides that he can’t pass up the opportunity to bulldoze the poop. Me: “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! WE DON’T PLAY WITH POOP!”

Again after a shower and a glass of wine, once again, we’re laughing our asses off!
